When I travelled to Europe it was shortly after I was heavily into life drawing. I started off typically drawing from paintings that caught my attention. Not being a painter, I found it a fruitless excerise as I was just copying whatever was in front of me with pencil. So I shifted my attention to all the sculpture rooms (which were like my gardens of eden). The best thing about drawing from sculpture is that you’re not copying someone else’s style of drawing or painting. You can also choose your own angle too, or have more than one. I also swapped to felt tip pens and A4 layout pads – it was less cumbersome and messy compared to charcoal pencils and large format drawing pads.
However, I think I’ve drawn more than enough armless nymphs and tight-buttocked male youths to satisfy me.
